Dave Zirin: "The Power and Politics of Sports" with Mary Tillman & Weyland Southon
Join us for a dynamic discussion and after-party with award-winning author and cultural critic Dave Zirin. In his only East Bay appearance on this tour, Dave will explore the intersections of sports and politics with Weyland Southon, host of KPFA's "Father Figures" and co-founder of "Hard Knock Radio."

They'll be joined by very special guest Mary Tillman, mother of Pat Tillman and author of "Boots on the Ground By Dusk: My Tribute to Pat Tillman." Pat was a pro football player who enlisted in the U.S. Army in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. A decorated soldier and an atheist who was critical of the U.S. war in Iraq, Tillman's death by "friendly fire" and the government's handling of it have stirred great controversy.

AFTER PARTY: Stick around and get down to the mighty sounds of the Megalodon Sound System!!

Featuring: DJ Max Champ + Special Secret Guests.

This event and the previous night's discussion in SF with Dave are organized by SoleSpace and our colleagues at the Center for Political Education (CPE), who operate the Eric Quezada Center for Culture and Politics at 518 Valencia.

BIO for DAVE ZIRIN:

Dave Zirin is an award-winning author and cultural critic who challenges readers to examine the intersections of sports and politics. From the NHL's recent efforts to reach out to gay hockey players to baseball's recent commemoration of Jackie Robinson, to the to the Boston Marathon bombing, Zirin helps us decode the political messages and messaging embedded in sports.

He will discuss his most recent book, "Game Over: How Politics Has Turned the Sports World Upside Down" (The New Press), which USA Today's Christine Brennan called "the perfect book for our time in sports."

Zirin is co-author of the NAACP Image Award-nominated "The John Carlos Story" (Haymarket Books, September 2011.) In 2010, Zirin published "Bad Sports: How Owners are Ruining the Games We Love" (Scribner). Zirin writes regularly for The Nation, where he is sports editor, and his writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Sports Illustrated.com and The Progressive.

Previously, he scribed "Welcome to the Terrordome: The Pain, Politics, and Promise of Sports," with a foreword by Public Enemy's Chuck D, and "A People's History of Sports in the United States," which forms part of Howard Zinn's People's History series for The New Press.
